"If There Were Such a Thing as Happiness" is a character study of Erby, a quirky young woman trying to obtain happiness. The story began with a stream of conscious writing style to get into the mindset, interests, and thought patterns of Erby. Eventually, the world of Erby seemed full of possibilities so I developed a short play about her, enlisting the help of other characters. While taking a bath one afternoon, Erby encounters a religious man who opens her mind to a new way of thinking. With support from her deceased father, a neighbor-friend, and the man she serves at the diner (who function much like a Greek chorus), Erby works to settle unfinished business. The play is still in the second draft phase, and I plan to revise and add to it over the next year. My goal for the Fringe Festival is to present both the monologue and the play as a way to show to the audience both the process of creative development and the theatrical journey from Erby’s mind to her reality.
